The 5-Step Strategy for Mastering Higher-Level Test Taking
Zina Hollis
To foster engagement and collaboration in your classroom, have students work in teams, pairs, or during small group instruction to practice and refine their test-taking skills using this strategy.
End-of-year assessments have evolved significantly in recent years. Students are now expected to tackle higher-order questions that demand critical thinking, comprehensive written responses, and the ability to connect multiple texts and ideas. Test responses often require essay-length answers that integrate evidence from texts while maintaining proper grammar, conventions, and style.
Bloom’s Taxonomy, a widely recognized framework for categorizing levels of student learning, provides a foundation for this shift. Originally defined by nouns (Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation), the taxonomy has been revised to emphasize actionable verbs (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating). The following 5-Step Strategy for Higher-Level Test Taking is built upon these levels, helping students develop the skills they need to excel in modern assessments.
1. Read the Entire Question (Remembering and Understanding – Levels 1 and 2)
Students must carefully read and comprehend the question to identify what is being asked. This involves remembering key details and understanding the task. Teachers should train students to highlight important keywords that clarify whether the question requires selecting the best answer, identifying incorrect options, or addressing a specific scenario. Developing this skill reduces confusion and helps students approach the question with clarity.
2. Review All Answer Choices (Understanding and Applying – Levels 2 and 3)
Students must read and understand all answer choices before applying their knowledge to evaluate each option. Often, students fail to consider all possibilities, leading to hasty or incorrect answers. Teachers can introduce strategies like the “Silent Think Aloud” to help students process each choice. For example, students might think, “Choice A isn’t correct because there’s no evidence to support it in the text or prior learning.” This reflective process improves their ability to judge each option critically.
3. Analyze the Answer Choices (Applying and Analyzing – Levels 3 and 4)
At this stage, students must connect each answer choice back to the question. Analyzing the alignment between the question and the possible answers allows students to narrow their options. Using strategies like the “Silent Think Aloud,” students can mentally evaluate how well each answer corresponds to the question. They should also draw upon class discussions, independent reading, and other educational experiences to reinforce their reasoning.
4. Evaluate and Decide on the Answer (Analyzing and Evaluating – Levels 4 and 5)
Higher-order thinking skills are essential for evaluating each remaining answer choice. Students should analyze the question’s requirements and weigh each option against what they’ve learned. The process of elimination plays a critical role here, as students justify why certain options are incorrect and focus on the most plausible answers. By reducing the choices to two, students increase their chances of selecting the correct response.
5. Construct Written Responses and Essays (Creating – Level 6)
Modern assessments often require students to construct written responses that synthesize multiple texts and ideas. This step integrates all previous levels of thinking into a cohesive response. Students must:
-
Understand the prompt.
-
Apply evidence from texts to support their claims.
-
Analyze how best to organize their response using brainstorming and prewriting techniques.
-
Evaluate their work to ensure the question is fully addressed.
-
Revise and edit for grammar, style, and conventions.
Creating a high-quality response demonstrates a student’s mastery of the material. Teachers should emphasize the importance of citing textual evidence, using proper grammar, and adhering to conventions while encouraging creativity and clarity in written expression.
By following this 5-Step Strategy, students can confidently tackle higher-level test questions and develop essential critical thinking and writing skills. With consistent practice, they will be better equipped to succeed in challenging assessments and beyond.
